The Bowline

Creates a fixed loop that won't slip. Make a small loop in the standing part. Pass the end up through the loop, around behind the standing part, and back down through the loop. 'The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, and goes back in the hole.'

Quick and easy for securing rope to a post or tree. Wrap around the post, cross over, wrap again, and tuck under the second wrap. Tighten by pulling both ends.

The Figure Eight

A stopper knot that prevents rope from slipping through a hole. Make a loop, pass the end behind the standing part, and through the loop. Easy to untie even after being loaded.

Step 4 of 5

The Square Knot

Joins two ropes of equal thickness. Right over left, then left over right. Easy to remember: 'Right over left, left over right — makes a knot both tidy and tight.'

Common Mistake

A granny knot (same direction both times) will slip. Make sure you alternate directions.

The Trucker's Hitch

Creates a mechanical advantage for tightening. Make a loop in the standing line, pass the working end through an anchor point, back through the loop, and pull tight. Secure with two half hitches.

Pro Tip

The Trucker's Hitch provides roughly 2:1 mechanical advantage — perfect for securing loads.
