Choose Your Site

Look for flat ground free of rocks, roots, and slopes. Avoid low areas that could collect water. Check above for dead branches. Consider proximity to water sources and wind exposure.

Step 2 of 6

Lay the Ground Cloth

If using a ground cloth, lay it down first. Fold any excess under — exposed edges will channel rain under your tent.

Step 3 of 6

Spread and Stake the Tent

Unfold the tent body on the ground cloth. Stake the corners loosely. Position the door away from prevailing wind.

Step 4 of 6

Assemble and Insert Poles

Connect the pole sections. Thread poles through sleeves or attach to clips per your tent design. For freestanding tents, the tent will start to take shape.

Step 5 of 6

Attach Rainfly

Drape the rainfly over the tent frame. Secure it to the tent corners and stake out the vestibule if applicable. This is your weather protection.

Tip

Always use the rainfly, even in clear weather. It prevents condensation and dew from soaking through.
