Step 1 of 5
Try Boiling Water First

Boil a kettle of water and pour it directly down the drain in 2-3 stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour. This dissolves soap and grease clogs.
Warning
Don't use boiling water on PVC pipes — use very hot tap water instead.
Step 2 of 5
Use a Plunger

Fill the sink with a few inches of water. If there's an overflow hole, cover it with a wet cloth. Place the plunger over the drain and pump vigorously 15-20 times.
Tip
Use a flat-bottom sink plunger, not a toilet plunger with the flange.
Step 3 of 5
Try Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour 1 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup vinegar. Cover the drain and wait 30 minutes. Flush with hot water. This natural reaction helps break down organic clogs.
Step 4 of 5
Clean the P-Trap

Place a bucket under the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink). Loosen the slip nuts with pliers. Remove the trap, clean out debris, and reassemble.
Common Mistake
Forgetting to place a bucket under the P-trap — it WILL contain dirty water.
Step 5 of 5
Use a Drain Snake

If the clog persists, feed a drain snake into the drain. Rotate as you push. When you feel resistance, continue rotating while pulling back. Flush with hot water.
Pro Tip
Use a drain screen to prevent future clogs from hair and food particles.
