Blot, Don't Rub

For fresh stains, immediately blot with a clean white cloth from the outside in. Never rub — this pushes the stain deeper and spreads it. Apply pressure and keep switching to clean areas of the cloth.

Common Mistake

Rubbing a stain makes it worse. Always blot with a pressing motion.

Step 2 of 4

Apply Cleaning Solution

Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 2 cups warm water. Spray onto the stain and let sit for 5 minutes. For tough stains, sprinkle baking soda first, then spray.

Step 3 of 4

Blot Again and Rinse

Blot the treated area with a damp cloth to remove the cleaning solution. Repeat the application if the stain persists. Rinse by blotting with a water-only cloth.

Step 4 of 4

Dry the Area

Place a dry cloth or paper towels over the area and weigh down with a heavy book. Leave for several hours. The cloth will absorb remaining moisture and prevent wick-back staining.

Tip

For red wine stains, apply salt immediately to absorb the wine before cleaning.
