Step 1 of 5
Thread the Needle

Cut about 24 inches of thread. Pass it through the needle's eye and pull until both ends meet. Tie a knot at the end with both strands together.
Tip
Wet the thread tip slightly to stiffen it for easier threading.
Step 2 of 5
Mark the Position

Mark where the button should go using the existing buttonhole as a guide. For a 4-hole button, mark the center position. Pin the button in place if needed.
Step 3 of 5
Sew Through the Holes

Push the needle up through the fabric and one button hole. Then down through the diagonal hole. Repeat 4-6 times. Move to the other pair of holes and repeat. For 2-hole buttons, simply alternate between the two holes.
Pro Tip
For a 4-hole button, sew in an X or parallel pattern — either works, but be consistent.
Step 4 of 5
Create a Shank

Wrap the thread around the base of the button 5-6 times to create a thread shank. This gives the buttonroom to sit above the fabric and makes buttoning easier.
Tip
Flat buttons on thick fabric need a shank. Buttons on thin fabric may not need one.
Step 5 of 5
Secure and Trim

Push the needle to the underside of the fabric. Make a few small stitches and tie a secure knot. Trim the thread close to the knot. Give the button a gentle tug to test.
