Step 1 of 7

Warm Up the Engine

Run the engine for 2-3 minutes. Warm oil flows faster and carries more contaminants. Park on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

Tip

Don't run the engine too long — hot oil can cause burns.

Step 2 of 7

Locate and Remove Drain Plug

Slide under the vehicle and locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Place your drain pan underneath. Use a socket wrench to remove the plug. Oil will flow out quickly.

Warning

Oil may be hot. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Step 3 of 7

Remove Old Oil Filter

Locate the oil filter (consult manual if needed). Use an oil filter wrench to loosen it. Unscrew by hand and let it drain into the pan. Compare the old and new filter to ensure they match.

Step 4 of 7

Install New Oil Filter

Apply a thin film of new oil to the new filter's gasket. Thread it on by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten ¾ turn more. Do not overtighten.

Common Mistake

Overtightening the oil filter — hand-tight plus ¾ turn is all you need.

Step 5 of 7

Replace Drain Plug

Once oil has fully drained, reinstall the drain plug with a new washer if needed. Tighten to manufacturer's torque specification — usually 25-30 ft-lbs.

Step 6 of 7

Add New Oil

Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine. Insert a funnel and pour in the correct amount and type of oil. Check your manual — most engines take 4-6 quarts.

Tip

Start with about 80% of the specified amount, check the dipstick, then add as needed.

Step 7 of 7

Check Level and Dispose

Start the engine and let it run for a minute. Shut off and wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick — oil should be between the two marks. Properly dispose of used oil at an auto parts store or recycling center.

Warning

Never pour used oil down a drain or in the trash. It's toxic and illegal.
